EverythingYou'veAlwaysWantedtoKnowAboutOurIKEAInteractive3DWallDecorPlanner

After winning the FWA Of The Day on March 28, 2019, for our IKEA Interactive 3D Wallspace Planner, FWA approached us to share some insights with their readership. Naturally, we couldn't refuse this request. Ever wondered why the cat in the case film is wearing a VR headset? Just read the interview.
What did you want to achieve with the project?
We wanted to make home furnishing “great again” — sorry for that. IKEA.de offers various planning and configuration tools that differ in UX and GUI. It was time to consolidate this inspiration and know-how into a single solution, enabling a highly pleasant and time-saving design of one's own four walls.
What technical challenges did you face and how did you solve them?
To ensure the reliability of the WebGL-based tool for the future, we had to develop a solid foundation that, through its innovative modularity, can support the future introduction of the tool into other product departments while optimizing the current 3D pipeline. The next milestone was developing a fully responsive mobile-first solution that can be seamlessly integrated into IKEA's latest web frontend release.
What does winning an FWA Award mean to you?
To avoid repeating ourselves too often (community, love, inspiration - it all fits)... This win means that we are one step closer to the 100th FWA Of The Day. We have already reached almost a quarter of these 100. That means half of half of 100.
Tools we used:
We developed with Vue.js and Three.js (WebGL) to combine the 3D environment with the user interface in HTML. This hybrid approach allows intuitive drag-and-drop of the 3D products from the side panel onto the wall. By using Popmotion, we were able to invest a lot of love into the micro-interactions and the surreal physics of the wall decor. And ultimately, we are ready for WebAR as soon as Google Chrome enables the WebXR hit-test feature.
Three facts you should know:
- Actually, no cat wore a VR headset during the case film shoot.
- We actually don't know why the VR headset is even relevant.
- Did you even notice that the cat in the film is wearing a VR headset?!
