IM.PRINT - scan your fingerprint & receive a piece of art

IM.PRINT is a side project that explores identity and individuality. You scan your finger, and based on that, an artwork is generated from the lines of the print. Once displayed, the image can be further edited. To complete the journey, it can be sent to mobile phones and downloaded.

APPROACH

We had an idea... Based on the function of the iPhone's Touch ID, we thought about whether and how an artwork could be created from the lines of a person's fingerprint. Idea: The finger is scanned by a print scanner and then translated into an individual digital artwork.

BACKGROUND

Vivien and Jan (Digital Designer and Unity Developer from Cologne) attempted to artistically implement this otherwise abstract idea. At the push of a button or finger, a personal and individual artwork is created that reinterprets one's own identity.

ARTWORK

An artwork emerges from colorful, organic shapes that build and move and can be individually interpreted as a piece of art. Since no fingerprint is the same, the resulting digital artwork is absolutely unique. Moreover, the prints already offer a lot of potential for reinterpretation in their raw form - thus, the first mood boards for the design vision were created.

TECHNOLOGIES

The USB fingerprint scanner Futronic FS80H uses CMOS sensor technology and a precise optical system to capture the images of the print. We used Unity3D to load the scanned image and an OpenCV plugin to extract the main lines of the scanned fingerprint. The lines were used to generate a 3D mesh that corresponds to the scanned fingerprint. The mesh can be used to generate effects and animations.

THE BIG VISION

We are planning a darkroom with room-filling projections that interactively respond to the user and can be manipulated in color, shape, and mode.

  1. Generated graphic (x3 walls)
  2. Laser wall projector placed behind the boundary (x3)
  3. Introduction/CTA/standing mark
  4. Fingerprint scanner/podium
  5. Leap Motion: hand and gesture control device
