We know e-learning platforms as a quick way to provide learning materials and make them easily accessible on the web. Many learning management systems (LMS) already offer a wide range of possibilities, from live streams to exam forms. However, what they lack is immersion. Especially in industries where physical products are involved, and participants want to see, explore, and try them out. This is where WebGL comes into play: a 3D framework that allows us to display 3D objects on the web in a detailed, interactive, and experiential manner. In combination with traditional LMS systems, these interactive 3D experiences work hand in hand to enable an exciting e-learning experience. WebGL is supported by all common browsers, including Internet Explorer from version 11, and works on various mobile platforms, including iOS from version 8.

Implementation Possibilities: Experiences with Apps

If you have only a limited number of participants and need a more immersive (customized) application, experiences with apps can be the right way to go when it comes to e-learning and simulation.

Special apps can take e-learning and simulation scenarios to the next level. These applications, running on specified hardware like an iPad Pro or a well-specified laptop, can - powered by a game engine - be more realistic and immersive than any website. The possibilities for using and providing apps are diverse: users can download the app to their own (compatible) devices or use the hardware provided by the company to immerse themselves in courses and simulations. Even sending a set of devices to users for a specific time or installing them on a large touchscreen in your offices is no big deal.

Implementation Possibilities: AR/VR Experiences

Augmented and Virtual Reality experiences offer the highest level of immersive experience. They are an immense accelerator for learning outcomes.

An AR or VR application is the perfect solution for training on machines and systems that are difficult to access due to their size, availability, or location. By being able to move around and interact with the training objects, users gain a better understanding of the processes. Furthermore, VR offers the possibility of hand and tool tracking, which helps to dive even deeper into the experience. Literal learning by doing. If desired, even multi-user experiences can be created, enabling collaborative training with instructors and students - even across different locations. Oh, and by the way: AR and VR solutions don't have to be bulky and difficult to set up: iPad (Pro's) and current-generation VR headsets like the Oculus Quest are easy to ship, set up, and use - and at low acquisition costs.

We used Apple's ARKit 2 to showcase the diverse applications of their innovative fastening system 'Witols' at trade shows.
