InsideunsereaudiovisuelleKunsterfahrungIM.PRINT

IM.PRINT is an audiovisual and immersive installation that transcends the boundaries of physical space. The art experience reveals the beauty of humanity and expresses the viewer's inner self. With a spontaneous fingertip, each visitor dives into the heart of their identity. After IM.PRINT won an FWA Of The Day, the creators of the platform asked us to give their readership a small but fine insight into the Experience.
What did you aim to achieve with the project?
The goal was to create an unforgettable installation for our showroom visitors by using their fingerprint, which corresponds to the core of their identity, as the central element of the visualization. Additionally, we wanted the installation to be easily scalable and modifiable for museums, festivals, and brand-related events. For us, it was great to thoroughly engage with art and design and to be able to shift away from the necessity of problem-solving or a product-centered approach.
What technical challenges arose and how did you overcome them?
One difficulty was recreating the shape of the fingerprint with floating particles. This was achieved using image processing to recognize and extract the main lines of the fingerprint, with a specific anchor point defined for each of the numerous particles. The particles are distributed along these structural lines and continuously attracted to them.
As a result, the fingerprint is visible until an interaction with the jumping motion occurs. Once no interaction takes place or the particles are no longer within reach of the hand position, they slowly move back to their intended starting point, organically rebuilding the scanned fingerprint shape.
What does it mean to you to win an FWA Award?
We were happy and surprised at the same time to win the FWA Award right after a day in live judging! IM.PRINT started as a fun and exploratory side project, playing with artistic visuals, sounds, and a simple concept. It has shown that empowering creative people to work on their own abstract or playful vision can develop into a quality product that ultimately captivates people with its magical charm…
Tools we used:
With the fingerprint scanner Futronic FS80H, the visitor's finger was interactively scanned, the scanned image was processed with OpenCV to extract the main lines, and the particles were created and visualized with Unity3D. For real-time interaction with the particles, Leap Motion was implemented. Both Leap Motion and the scanner were seamlessly integrated into a futuristic terminal design located in the center of the room. For the setup of the room, mirror glass was installed on the surrounding walls and floor to enhance the spatial immersion into the "Infinity Room".
Three hot facts:
- The project was originally intended for a small television screen but was ultimately conceived as an entire room experience.
- The sound design was crucial for the room ambiance and made up 80% of the overall experience.
- IM.PRINT was the exciting and entertaining highlight for visitors of all ages at our internal showroom event.
