Māui Leap: Immersive Learning in Mixed Reality

The idea for our latest Demodern Lab project emerged with the release of an amazing new device: the Mixed Reality headset Magic Leap. With the help of this innovation, we are working on a groundbreaking storytelling experience in Mixed Reality.

May we introduce you to Māui?

As a popular figure from the Maori myths of Polynesia and New Zealand (Hot Fact: he is also portrayed by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in Disney’s Moana), we bring the demigod Māui and one of his many stories to life through a unique and educational adventure.

Background

Jesse Body ("Kiwi" Experience Designer from New Zealand and therefore predestined for this experience) and Team Demodern Cologne are realizing the project to first familiarize colleagues with the culture and language of the Maori and then (hopefully very soon) to bring it into New Zealand's curricula and classrooms.

Technologies

Magic Leap is THE brand new, top-exclusive application case of Augmented Reality and the biggest competitor of Microsoft HoloLens. The device comes in the form of a "Lightwear" headset and a processor/battery pack for immersive Augmented Reality. The six degrees of freedom (6DoF) and the sensor suite make objects contextually visible and experienceable. To build the world in AR as realistically as possible, we develop all 3D assets in Unity.

Vision

We aim to seamlessly connect modern education and traditional stories for future generations, so that vocabulary is expanded and cultural awareness in the classroom is enhanced, both of which can be promoted by teachers in schools.

Keep your AR headset ready, the first prototype is coming soon...
