Sasu's Mystical Quest: First Insights into the Interactive Video Game

In March 2018, we, Demodern - Creative Technologies, were contacted by Royal Caribbean International from Miami, one of the largest cruise lines in the world, to discuss ideas and concepts for designing and developing an interactive game on board their new ship for the Far Eastern market - Spectrum of the Seas. Almost a year later, we spent a week in Hong Kong and Shanghai and spent some time on the cruise giant.

Goals

On board the Spectrum of the Seas, guests will find an interactive video game - Sasu's Mystical Quest. The goal of the game is to help the main character Sasu dive through four underwater worlds. Guests control Sasu using a specially crafted LED balance board. The player must shift their weight left and right, jump up and down to collect gems, and avoid obstacles to achieve the highest possible score. They should keep an eye out for magical creatures that can assist them on their journey and be cautious of tentacles. If Sasu gets caught in one of the kraken's arms, the player must shake until Sasu is freed.

Technical Background: Unity Setup

Sasu's world is created from pre-made landscape sections arranged in random order. There are four different landscapes to create a varied experience. The obstacles look different for each scenery but work the same everywhere. This gives us the freedom to mix landscapes, obstacles, and difficulty levels freely. The game was developed with Unity.

Vibrant 3D Environment

Elaborately developed and animated in 3D, schools of fish, plants, and animals bring the underwater world to life. A wide range of post-processing filters (fog, vignette, chromatic aberration, color correction, particle systems, custom shaders) create a striking underwater atmosphere that remains saturated, colorful, and slightly cartoonish.
