September has always been the strongest month of the year - at least when it comes to series premieres. The summer lull is over, the days are getting shorter, and people are cozying up at home on the couch with various streaming services. Singles are entertained and feel less lonely with their series heroes, while couples escape the gray everyday life with "Better Call Saul," "Ozark," and others. But it's not just the series continuations that are impressive - the new releases promise quite a bit. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky, FreeTV & Co. - we've compiled some series highlights for your next binge-watching marathon.

"MANIAC" with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill

Series with a star-studded cast: Emma Stone (Oscar for "La La Land") and Jonah Hill (Oscar nomination for "The Wolf Of Wall Street") go wild... Owen (Jonah Hill), the schizophrenic son of an entrepreneur, and the relationship-challenged Annie (Emma Stone) participate in a drug trial by Dr. Mantleray (Justin Theroux). The doctor promises that his medication can eliminate all mental anguish. Unforeseen side effect: Owen and Annie prefer to stay in their fantasy mindscape rather than return to reality. It starts on September 21 on Netflix.

"Kidding" with Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey plays the American children's TV entertainer Mr. Jeff Pickles in Kidding. In front of the camera, his life always appears colorful and cheerful, but in reality, it's a shambles. Soon, the lines between show and reality blur in his mind, and he slowly drifts into madness. The ten-part dramedy was realized by Michel Gondry and starts on September 9 on Showtime. Michel Gondry and Jim Carrey have previously worked together on the film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with Kate Winslet.

"Sharp Objects" with Amy Adams

And another series where a Hollywood star takes on the role of the heroine. A heroine who carves words into her flesh. The HBO series "Sharp Objects" explores why wounded women often hurt themselves. The crime reporter Camille Preaker (brilliantly played by Amy Adams), who suffers from alcoholism and was recently released from a psychiatric hospital after years of self-harm, returns to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to investigate the murders of two young girls. The task leads her back to her family home under the critical eye of her mother Adora, a small-town personality who forces Preaker to confront some personal demons. The series can be watched on Sky.

"Counterpart" - Cold War in a Parallel World

Oscar winner J.K. Simmons ("Whiplash") plays Howard Silk, who works at a UN office in Berlin. He has no idea that the transition to a Cold War-created parallel world is being monitored there. When Silk suddenly finds himself face to face with Howard Prime (Simmons in a dual role), he is utterly confused. The first ten episodes of the US series hit, filmed in Berlin, can be watched from September 28 on the new Starzplay channel on Amazon Video.

"Somewhere Between" from September 28 on Netflix

This ten-part mystery thriller is an adaptation of the South Korean series "God’s Gift: 14 Days" from 2014. In the US remake, Paula Patton plays journalist Laura Price, whose daughter Serena (Aria Birch) is killed by a serial killer. When Laura inexplicably wakes up a week earlier in the past, she tries to stop the unknown murderer.

"Babylon Berlin" finally on Free TV

Nearly a year after its Sky debut, the German production based on the crime bestsellers by Volker Kutscher celebrates its free-TV premiere. The 16 episodes center around Commissioner Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch), transferred from Cologne to Berlin, who is drawn into an abyss of organized crime, corrupt police, and political conspiracy shortly before the collapse of the Weimar Republic by the discovery of an unidentified corpse. From September 30, the series can be experienced at 8:15 PM on ARD.
