The Boxx transforms outdated devices into a new multimedia experience.

Old hardware deserves a loving place in everyday life.
Digital communication happens constantly, yet many devices are discarded too early. The Boxx addresses this dilemma with an accessible approach: from an iPad and an IKEA frame, a meaningful object is created that prioritizes relevance over mere feasibility.
What we delivered: a simple DIY kit as a PDF, two focused single-serving apps, and a clear design approach that reinterprets old hardware. The solution is cost-effective, visually appealing, and immediately replicable.
The Boxx is an iPad in a frame as a physical interface.

The first apps are intentionally streamlined: 'Cosima' serves as a clock and calendar with selective countdowns, while 'Instagram' displays a live stream of a hashtag and receives messages from the smartphone. Both applications rely on clear, stylish design and provide useful, single-purpose functions.

A simple IKEA hack makes the Boxx accessible to everyone.
The process followed clear phases: Discover, build a prototype, create a material list, and publish the DIY kit. The magic lies in reduction: few parts, clear instructions, and immediate benefits. Technically, the apps run locally on the device and can be easily expanded. The key learning was that low effort barriers encourage enthusiasm and replication.

In the video, we show the complete assembly step by step and provide practical tips on materials and tools. The PDF kit includes a shopping list, a picture-based guide, and alternative suggestions for different iPad models; the download is available on the project page.

Design and details are the focus: Cosima uses cosmic style templates to poetically visualize time, while the Instagram app elegantly brings social content into everyday life. Both apps are designed to look attractive in the frame while delivering clear, useful information.
